Benefits of Pet Vaccinations

Vaccinating your cat has numerous benefits for owner, family members, and your cat. Humans are also at risk for certain contagious diseases, such as rabies, and the effects can be as serious in people as it is in pets. In addition, vaccinations can save your cat from pain that is caused by diseases and potentially save its life.

Kitten Vaccinations

Your kitten has a fragile immune system, especially in the first few months of their life. They should receive a series of vaccines over a 12- to 16-week period, which start once they are six to eight months old. In addition, if you recently adopted an adult cat, they might be overdue for vaccinations, and you would follow the same process as you would for a kitten.

Adult Cat Vaccinations

Although your adult cat has to visit our vets less frequently, they will still need boosters and additional vaccinations throughout their life. Depending on your lifestyle, where you live, and any preexisting conditions your cat may have, our veterinarians will provide a guideline for vaccinations that are recommended for your cat. While core vaccines are required for all pets, you should also discuss the factors that might put your cat at risk for diseases even with non-core vaccines.

Core Vaccines

Core vaccinations are essential for all cats, as they protect against life-threatening diseases. The core vaccines for cats include rabies, distemper, feline herpesvirus, feline calicivirus, and feline leukemia. These vaccines are recommended for all cats, regardless of their age, health status, or lifestyle.

Non-Core Vaccines

Non-core vaccines are personalized for your cat's lifestyle and environment. A cat that enjoys roaming its local neighborhood will have different needs than a house cat. Not only that, but a feline that lives in an urban area that is more likely to encounter and catch pests like mice will also have requirements that differ from those living in a rural area. In addition, if you board your cat, we may recommend vaccinating against Bordetella or kennel cough.
