At Aliso Beach Animal Clinic, our veterinarian in Laguna Beach, CA has been performing spay and neuter surgery for many years. While spaying and neutering provide pets with numerous health benefits, the procedures raise many questions for pet owners. Following are the answers to some questions our veterinarian frequently receives regarding spaying and neutering.

Spay & Neuter FAQs

Is it Important to Have a Pet Spayed or Neutered?

There are several behavioral and health benefits to spaying or neutering. Spaying and neutering can curb undesirable mate-seeking behavior. Spaying and neutering can also prevent your pet from developing cancer of the reproductive organs. It is also the best way to prevent unplanned litters from being born.

How Old Do Kittens Need to Be for Surgery?

Kittens should have the surgery at around 8-10 weeks old. Our vet may recommend waiting until all vaccines have been administered. For adult cats, our vet will examine them and perform blood work to determine whether or not your pet can safely undergo anesthesia.

How Old Do Dogs Need to Be for Surgery?

Puppies can be spayed or neutered as young as eight weeks. However, our vet may recommend that they complete their vaccines before having surgery. For adult dogs over five years, our vet will examine them and do blood work to evaluate their health and ability to handle the anesthesia.

Can Pets Be Spayed While in Heat?

It is recommended that the surgery not be performed if your pet is in while they are in heat. The risk level for the pet during and after surgery is much greater. Most vets recommend waiting two weeks after heat before performing surgery.

What is the Recovery Time Following Surgery?

It is recommended you limit your pet’s activity for 7-10 days following the procedure. Our veterinarian will provide information on specific recovery instructions. During this period, dogs can have short walks. Cats need to be confined to prevent jumping.
