Routine Bearded Dragon Veterinary Care
Reptiles often conceal early illness. A routine examination establishes your dragon’s normal weight, body condition, muscle tone, jaw structure and behavior before an obvious problem develops.
A bearded dragon wellness examination may include evaluation of:
- Weight, growth and body condition
- Jaw and bone firmness
- Eyes, nostrils, ears and mouth
- Heart and respiratory function
- Abdominal organs and gastrointestinal contents
- Muscle tone and limb strength
- Spine, tail and joints
- Skin, scales and shedding

- Stool and urate appearance

Bearded Dragon Enclosure Size and Design
An adult bearded dragon requires enough space to move between a hot basking area and a substantially cooler zone.
A practical minimum enclosure size for one adult is approximately:
- 48 inches long
- 24 inches deep
- 24 inches high
Larger enclosures can provide greater opportunities for exercise and enrichment, provided the correct temperature and UVB gradients can still be maintained.
A suitable enclosure should provide:
- A secure top or front
- Good ventilation
- A bright, heated basking area
- A cooler shaded end
- Hides in both warm and cool areas
- Stable rocks or branches for climbing
- Nonslip walking surfaces
- Enough room to turn, walk and fully extend the body
- Protection from direct contact with heating elements
Run a new enclosure for several days before placing the dragon inside. This provides time to measure and adjust the heat, UVB and humidity rather than experimenting while the animal is already living in it.
Aquarium volume expressed only in gallons does not fully describe usable floor space. Long, wide enclosures are generally more useful than tall, narrow ones for creating a safe thermal gradient.
Temperature and the Basking Gradient
Bearded dragons are ectothermic. They depend on environmental heat to regulate digestion, activity, immune function and metabolism.
The enclosure should not be maintained at one uniform temperature. The dragon must be able to move between warmer and cooler areas.
General Temperature Targets
Common starting ranges for a healthy bearded dragon include:
- Basking-surface temperature: approximately 100–108°F
- Cool end: approximately 72–79°F
- Night temperature: generally not below approximately 68–72°F
These are general husbandry ranges rather than a substitute for individualized veterinary guidance. Age, medical status, equipment and enclosure design may affect the final setup.
Measure the Surface, Not Only the Air
A wall-mounted thermometer does not reliably measure the surface where the dragon actually basks.
Use:
- A digital thermometer with an appropriately placed probe
- An infrared temperature device for checking surface temperature
- A second digital thermometer at the cool end
Check temperatures regularly. Heating requirements may change with room temperature, seasons, air conditioning and equipment age.
Use Thermostatic Control
Heat equipment should be appropriately regulated and positioned so the dragon cannot touch the bulb or heating element.
Heat rocks are not recommended. They can produce concentrated contact heat and severe burns without creating an appropriate whole-enclosure temperature gradient.
Do not use bright white, red, blue or purple lights overnight. Bearded dragons need a normal dark period. When nighttime supplemental heat is medically necessary, a properly controlled non-light-emitting heat source is generally preferable.
UVB Lighting and Calcium Metabolism
UVB lighting is essential for normal vitamin D production and calcium use in bearded dragons.
Without adequate UVB exposure, a dragon may be unable to use dietary calcium effectively—even when calcium powder is being provided.
Create a UVB Gradient
The strongest UVB exposure should overlap the basking zone, with progressively less exposure toward the shaded end.
A commonly recommended target is:
- Basking area: UV Index approximately 3–5
- Shaded area: a gradient toward little or no direct UVB
The correct bulb and installation depend on:
- Fixture type
- Reflector
- Bulb strength
- Distance from the dragon
- Whether mesh is present
- Enclosure height
- Manufacturer specifications
UVB does not pass effectively through ordinary window glass. Placing an enclosure beside a sunny window does not replace a properly installed reptile UVB fixture and can create dangerous overheating.
UVB Output Declines Before Visible Light Fails
A bulb may continue to look bright after its useful UVB output has declined.
Replace the lamp according to the manufacturer’s instructions or measure output using an appropriate UV Index meter. Do not judge UVB performance by brightness alone.
Daily Light Cycle
A regular day-and-night cycle supports normal activity and seasonal behavior. A timer can provide a consistent schedule, commonly around 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness, with seasonal adjustment when medically appropriate.

Humidity and Ventilation
Bearded dragons originate from relatively dry environments, but “dry” does not mean completely dehydrated or without access to water.
A common ambient-humidity target is approximately 30–40%, measured with a reliable digital hygrometer.
Persistently high humidity combined with poor ventilation may contribute to respiratory or skin problems. Extremely dry conditions may contribute to dehydration and difficult shedding.
The enclosure should include:
- Good air exchange
- A clean shallow water dish
- Fresh moisture-containing greens
- A local humid hide or digging area when appropriate
- Regular removal of wet or soiled substrate
Do not mist the entire enclosure repeatedly without measuring the result. Humidity management should be based on actual readings and the dragon’s medical needs.
What Should a Bearded Dragon Eat?
Bearded dragons are omnivores. They eat both plant material and animal-based foods such as insects.
The proportion and frequency change as the dragon grows.
Juvenile Bearded Dragons
Young dragons require more animal protein to support rapid growth, but appropriate greens should still be offered early so plant foods become familiar.
A juvenile diet may include:
- Appropriately sized gut-loaded insects
- Finely chopped dark leafy greens
- Selected vegetables
- Calcium and vitamin supplementation according to the complete diet and UVB setup
Young dragons generally eat more frequently than adults. Exact frequency should be based on age, growth, body condition and veterinary guidance.
Adult Bearded Dragons
Adult dragons generally require a more plant-focused diet with fewer insects than rapidly growing juveniles.
A reasonable adult starting structure may include:
- Approximately half dark leafy greens
- A variety of chopped or grated vegetables
- A smaller proportion of appropriately selected insects
- Little or no fruit, or fruit only as an occasional treat
Adult dragons fed excessive insects—especially high-fat worms—can become overweight and may develop nutritional imbalances.
Appropriate Plant Foods
Useful foods may include a rotating selection of:
- Collard greens
- Mustard greens
- Turnip greens
- Dandelion greens from a pesticide-free source
- Escarole
- Endive or chicory
- Watercress
- Squash
- Other veterinarian-approved vegetables
Variety matters. Do not build the entire diet around one green.
Fruit is high in sugar and should not form a substantial part of the diet.
Appropriate Feeder Insects
Depending on availability and the individual dragon, feeder insects may include:
- Crickets
- Dubia or other appropriate roaches
- Black soldier fly larvae
- Silkworms
- Hornworms as part of a varied diet
- Other appropriately raised feeder insects
Mealworms, superworms and waxworms should generally not dominate the diet. Some are high in fat or have less favorable nutritional profiles.
Do not feed insects captured outdoors. They may contain pesticides, parasites or toxins.
Feeder-Insect Size
Prey should be appropriately sized for the dragon. Oversized insects may be difficult to swallow or digest, particularly for young dragons.
Remove uneaten insects after the feeding period. Crickets and some other insects may bite or stress a resting dragon.

Gut-Loading, Calcium and Vitamin Supplements
Most feeder insects naturally contain substantially more phosphorus than calcium. This imbalance must be addressed through proper gut-loading, dietary variety and appropriate supplementation.
Gut-Load Feeder Insects
Gut-loading means feeding insects a nutritionally complete, calcium-rich diet before offering them to the reptile.
Insects should generally be gut-loaded for approximately 24–72 hours according to the chosen product and veterinary plan.
Simply giving insects lettuce or bran is not equivalent to using a complete gut-loading diet.
Dusting Insects
Calcium powder may be lightly applied to feeder insects shortly before they are offered.
The appropriate product and frequency depend on:
- The dragon’s age
- Growth rate
- Reproductive status
- Diet composition
- UVB exposure
- Whether the supplement contains vitamin D3
- Other vitamin products being used
More supplementation is not automatically safer. Excess vitamin D, vitamin A or some minerals can also cause illness.

Water and Hydration
Provide clean fresh water in a shallow, stable dish in the cooler portion of the enclosure.
Some dragons drink infrequently from a standing bowl but still need continuous access.

- Treatment of an underlying medical condition affecting hydration
Routine soaking is not a substitute for drinking, proper diet or a medically appropriate environment. Baths can also create stress or chilling when performed incorrectly.
Signs of possible dehydration or disease include:
- Sunken eyes
- Weakness
- Reduced appetite
- Unusually dry or scant urates
- Weight loss
- Persistent skin-folding or poor shedding
Substrate, Climbing and Enrichment
The safest substrate depends on the dragon’s age, health and enclosure management.
Solid Substrates
Options may include:
- Paper during quarantine or illness
- Textured tile or slate
- Other washable nonslip surfaces
These surfaces simplify cleaning and allow stool monitoring. A separate digging box can provide enrichment when the primary floor is solid.
Naturalistic Loose Substrate
A properly formulated sand-and-soil mixture may be appropriate for a healthy adult in a correctly heated and managed enclosure.
Loose substrate becomes riskier when:
- The dragon is ill
- The enclosure is too cold
- The animal is consuming substrate
- Food is scattered directly into the substrate
- The material contains large or indigestible particles
- The enclosure cannot be kept clean

- Crushed walnut shell
- Corn-cob material

Enrichment
Bearded dragons benefit from opportunities to:

All rocks and branches must be stable and arranged to prevent collapse, falls or direct access to hot bulbs.
Should Bearded Dragons Live Together?
Bearded dragons are territorial and are generally safest when housed individually.
Even animals that appear peaceful may compete for:
- The best basking location
- UVB exposure
- Food
- Hides
- Space
Subordinate dragons may eat less, grow poorly or remain chronically stressed without obvious fighting.
Cohabitation may also lead to:
- Bites
- Missing toes or tail injuries
- Severe wounds

- Disease and parasite transmission
Do not assume that two females will always live safely together. Separate housing is the safest default.
Metabolic Bone Disease in Bearded Dragons
Nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism—commonly called metabolic bone disease—is one of the most serious and preventable conditions seen in captive bearded dragons.
It can develop when the body cannot maintain normal calcium balance because of:
- Inadequate UVB exposure
- Incorrect enclosure temperature
- Insufficient dietary calcium
- Excess dietary phosphorus
- Improper supplementation
- Kidney disease or another metabolic disorder
Signs of Metabolic Bone Disease
Possible signs include:
- Trembling or muscle twitching
- Weakness
- Difficulty walking
- A soft or swollen jaw
- Swollen limbs
- Abnormal posture
- Curved or deformed bones
- Fractures with minimal trauma
- Reduced appetite
- Constipation or cloacal prolapse

Changing the light bulb or adding calcium at home is not adequate treatment for an affected dragon.

- A complete husbandry review
Treatment may require fluids, injectable or oral calcium, nutritional support, pain management and careful correction of UVB, heat and diet.

Intestinal Parasites and Abnormal Stool
Bearded dragons may carry intestinal parasites without immediately appearing ill. A low number of some organisms may not require treatment, while heavier burdens or certain species can cause significant illness.

- Weight loss
- Poor growth
- Reduced appetite
- Weakness
- Dehydration
- Mucus or blood in the stool

Bring a fresh stool sample in a clean sealed container when requested. Refrigerate it if there will be a delay, but do not freeze it.

- Poor growth
- Weight loss

- Weakness
- Abnormal posture
- Neurologic signs

PCR testing may be considered for:
- A newly acquired dragon
- A juvenile that fails to thrive
- A household containing multiple bearded dragons

There is no vaccine and no medication that eliminates the virus. Management focuses on supportive care, husbandry, stress reduction and preventing exposure of other reptiles.
New reptiles should be quarantined, and equipment should not be shared without appropriate cleaning and disinfection.

Respiratory Disease
Respiratory disease in bearded dragons may be associated with infection, aspiration, improper temperature, excessive humidity, poor ventilation or another systemic condition.
Warning signs include:
- Open-mouth breathing away from normal basking behavior
- Increased breathing effort
- Persistent mucus or bubbles around the mouth or nostrils
- Repeated coughing or abnormal respiratory sounds
- Lethargy
- Reduced appetite
- Holding the head or neck in an unusual position
Respiratory problems require medical evaluation and husbandry review. Increasing enclosure temperature or giving leftover antibiotics without a diagnosis can delay appropriate care.
Impaction and Gastrointestinal Disease
Reduced stool production may be associated with:
- Inadequate temperature
- Dehydration
- Inappropriate substrate ingestion
- Oversized prey
- Parasites
- Poor diet
- Reproductive disease

Is My Bearded Dragon Brumating or Sick?
Brumation is a period of reduced activity and metabolism that may occur in some mature bearded dragons during cooler seasons.
A brumating dragon may:

- Spend more time hiding
- Eat less
- Move less
However, illness can look very similar.
Schedule an examination before assuming a dragon is brumating when it:
- Is young or still growing rapidly
- Has not had a recent wellness examination
- Has not had a recent fecal-parasite test
- Is losing weight

A healthy brumating adult should generally not experience significant ongoing weight loss.

Female Bearded Dragons and Egg Laying
Female bearded dragons may produce infertile eggs even when they have never lived with a male.
A mature female should have access to an appropriate laying area when reproductive behavior suggests she is developing eggs.
Possible signs include:
- Restlessness
- Repeated digging
- Reduced appetite
- Abdominal enlargement
- Frequent attempts to escape
Egg retention or dystocia can become life-threatening.
Seek veterinary care when a female:
- Strains without producing eggs
